DEHY Column Tank Dome Reinforcement Wrap

CLIENT CHALLENGE

  • A major industrial client faced a critical maintenance issue at their facility: stress cracking had been identified on the dome of a vital DEHY Column Tank. The problem presented two significant complexities:

  • Extreme Height: The tank dome was situated 92 feet in the air, requiring extensive and complex scaffolding and access planning.

  • Environmental Control: The required solution, a composite wrap repair, necessitates precise temperature and humidity control for the specialized epoxy resins to cure correctly. The project could not proceed without completely enclosing the work area inside a specialized “tent” to climatize the environment.

The conventional alternative—cutting out and replacing the entire tank dome—would have resulted in several weeks of costly downtime, severely impacting production and operational efficiency. The client required an expert partner capable of delivering a fast, high-quality, and structurally sound repair with minimal disruption.

COLT SOLUTION

  • Colt’s solution leveraged their expertise in advanced composite materials, offering a non-intrusive structural repair that avoided the need for full tank replacement.

  • Environmental Enclosure: The work area 92 feet in the air was fully enclosed in a specialized tent structure. This provided the necessary control to climatize the environment, ensuring the composite materials would adhere and cure properly.

  • Surface Preparation & Application: Following meticulous surface preparation, Colt applied an advanced carbon fiber composite system.

  • Structural Reinforcement: The team laid 8 layers of Carbon Fiber material onto the tank dome to provide complete, long-lasting structural reinforcement against the stress cracking.

This methodology provided a robust, custom-engineered solution that met the stringent safety and structural requirements of the high-pressure industrial environment.

RESULTS

Colt successfully completed the critical reinforcement project on time and within the client’s strict time constraints, delivering exceptional quality and service.

  • Downtime Avoided: Colt saved the customer several weeks of production downtime by eliminating the need to cut and replace the tank dome.
  • Asset Life Extension: The structural reinforcement allowed the customer to continue utilizing this critical tank in their process for the next 12 months without interruption.

The customer was highly pleased with the level and quality of service provided. By offering an engineered composite wrap solution, Colt not only addressed the immediate structural integrity issue but also preserved the client’s operational continuity, avoiding major expenditures and production losses associated with traditional steel replacement.
